48 Hours in Covent Garden: The Ultimate London Staycation
There's something incredibly special about seeing your own city through the eyes of a visitor.
My latest staycation reminded me that you don't need to board a plane to escape everyday life. Sometimes all it takes is checking into a beautiful hotel, wandering streets before they fill with people, and saying yes to everything that makes London one of the greatest cities in the world.
I checked into Henrietta Hotel in the heart of Covent Garden, and I honestly couldn't have picked a better based. Tucked away on a street just moments from the main market square, the hotel strikes the perfect balance between boutique luxury and feeling completely at home. My room was surprisingly spacious for central London, beautifully designed with warm, colourful interiors that immediately made me want to unpack and stay awhile. And the bed? Quite possibly some of the best hotel bedding I've ever slept in, one of those beds that makes getting up in the morning far harder than it should.
One of the biggest highlights of the stay was dinner at Henri, the hotel's restaurant from acclaimed chef Jackson Boxer. The menu is refined yet comforting, with French influences running throughout. If you're visiting, I can't recommend the Carrot Râpé enough, simple on paper but packed with flavour, and whatever you do, order the duck fat fries for the table. They're impossible to resist. To finish, the madeleines are an absolute must. Warm, buttery and freshly baked, they're the perfect ending to an exceptional meal and one of those desserts you'll still be thinking about long after you've left.
Of course, staying in Covent Garden means London is quite literally on your doorstep. I made the most of an early start, wandering through the streets and seeing the city wake up, with coffee shops opening their doors, market traders setting up, and the usually bustling market square enjoying a rare moment of calm.
As evening arrived, I wandered into Chinatown for cocktails at Experimental Cocktail Club. Hidden above the streets below, it's one of those places that feels like you've discovered a well-kept secret. The cocktails were expertly crafted and the perfect way to begin the evening. And of course, no trip to London's West End is complete without a show, and whether you're catching the heartwarming magic of Paddington or the wonderfully chaotic energy of Beetlejuice, having the theatres just a short stroll from your hotel makes the experience completely effortless.
But the night didn't end there.
A short walk took me to Stereo, where live jazz seamlessly blended into DJs and dancing late into the night. It was the perfect reminder that London never really slows down. One minute you're listening to incredible musicians, the next you're on the dancefloor.
We often spend hours searching for flights when some of the world's best experiences are sitting right in front of us. Beautiful hotels, award-worthy restaurants, world-class theatre, hidden cocktail bars and unforgettable nightlife. This trip was proof that London really does have it all.
Sometimes the best getaway isn't about going somewhere new. It's about falling in love with a familiar place all over again.
