From City Streets to Mountain Peaks: A Journey Through Northern Vietnam
What makes Northern Vietnam such an unforgettable destination is the contrast. Over the course of a single trip, you can move from the buzzing energy of Hanoi to the rolling mountains of Sapa, the peaceful waterways of Ninh Binh and the dramatic limestone landscapes of Halong Bay. Individually, each destination offers something completely different. Together, they create a journey that feels perfectly balanced.
The adventure begins in Hanoi, a city that never seems to slow down. The streets hum with motorbikes, market stalls spill onto pavements and every corner offers something new to discover. Some of our favourite moments were the simplest. Grabbing a classic banh mi from a local street vendor, enjoying dinner at Met Vietnamese Restaurant, and spending an afternoon at Hanoi Club, where we joined locals and visitors alike hitting golf balls out across the water.
From Hanoi, the pace shifts dramatically as you head north to Sapa. Surrounded by rice fields and mountain ranges, it's a destination that feels worlds away from the capital. For those looking for adventure, the trek to the summit of Fansipan is one you'll never forget. The climb took us around five and a half hours, scrambling over rocks and tackling steep ladders that tested both fitness and determination. There were moments when it felt relentless. But standing at the top, above the clouds, breathing in the crisp mountain air and looking out across the vast landscape below, every step felt worthwhile.
After the challenge of Sapa, Ninh Binh offers a different kind of escape. Often referred to as Vietnam's "Halong Bay on land", the region is defined by winding rivers and lush countryside. A boat trip through the waterways is a must, drifting quietly while local rowers guide you through caves and hidden passages. By evening, Chookie’s becomes the place to be. With its poolside setting, lively atmosphere and familiar comfort food, it offers a small taste of home while still feeling distinctly Vietnamese.
The final chapter of the journey takes you to Halong Bay aboard the Azura Cruise, where everything feels effortless from the moment you step on board. The itinerary is carefully curated, balancing activities with plenty of time to simply enjoy the scenery. Sitting on your private balcony as the sun disappears behind the limestone islands. Enjoying dinner on the top deck as the sky turns shades of orange and pink. Taking advantage of happy hour by the pool before slipping into the water and watching the bay slowly drift by.
It's these contrasts that make Northern Vietnam so special. The energy of Hanoi, the challenge of Sapa, the tranquillity of Ninh Binh and the luxury of Halong Bay each offer a completely different experience. Yet together, they create a journey that feels seamless, one that delivers adventure, culture, relaxation and some of the most spectacular scenery in Southeast Asia.
